Lesson 2:Idealized self Portrait
- In this lesson we learned about the concept of idealization by comparing the Greek gods to the superhero’s we love today. After discussing the similarities and differences between the two we came to the conclusion that many of the most traditional Greek gods are essentially the same characters as our favorite superheros. The only real difference is the culture that created them! Then we came up with a list of qualities Greek gods have in common with super hero’s and used this list of traits to create an idealized portrait of ourselves as super heros . After brainstorming for ideas and creating the final artwork, students wrote stories about their super-hero self’s adventures and shared them with the class.
To the left is an example of one students superhero plan. Every student was allowed to format the plan for their superhero however they wanted. The only requirement was that they had to describe the characteristics that made up their super hero. This student drew a detailed picture. Other students wrote only words, created mind maps, or drew pictures and included labels.
Pictured left is a student using their planning sheet to begin working on their final draft. Every student used their brainstorming/planning time differently. Some students wrote bullited lists and sketched pictures separately, some incorporated sketches into their list of notes, some used only pictures and others created mind maps.
Pictured above is two students working diligently on their final super hero compositions. As you can see the two pictures look very different. However, many students preferred to use an aesthetic reminiscent of comic book art by including bold black outlines and bright colors, with the figure in the middle of the picture.
