II.The Lesson
II. The Lesson
The main topic of this lesson is proportion. In this lesson we will focus on figuring out the standard proportions of the human face in order to gain a better understanding of how proportion can be used as a measurement tool. Using proportion to accurately represent an object in space is a fundamental skill in visual arts. Also, the human face follows a very simple set of proportional relationships that are standard among most faces. Once an artist has developed a concrete understanding of how to properly use proportion as a drawing tool, they are able to create an accurate rendering of an object at any scale they choose. This lesson was taught as a result of the proportional errors that were witnessed in student’s previous projects, which focused on the human figure as the main subject matter. Teaching students how proportion works as it relates to the human face will help them to succeed in any area of visual arts they choose. Proportion is a fundamental visual property necessary for success working in the areas of painting, drawing, sculpture, metal work, ceramics, and many other forms of visual art. The human face is a commonly chosen subject matter and understanding how to draw it is an important fundamental skill.
